Dr. Alexander M. Eaton, director of Retina Health Center, has received Lee County Medical Society’s 2012 Scientific Achievement Award in recognition for his outstanding work in the areas of retinal science and clinical research. The society honored him for his recent work with medical students from Tulane University measuring oxygen saturation in retinal tissues and for developing a genetic test to determine which patients would be at risk for steroid-induced glaucoma. Eaton accepted the award at the Lee County Medical Society’s annual medical service awards ceremony held on Friday, Jan. 20 at Edison State College.

In addition to his research, Eaton manages a clinical practice and treats patients at his Fort Myers and Naples locations. An alumnus of Duke University School of Medicine, he has served as an Associate Research Consultant for Duke University School of Medicine since 1999. In 2002, he became the Director for Retina Health Center and has won numerous honors and awards for his research and service, holds a number of patents on surgical devices, and authored “See Again! Reversing and Preventing Macular Degeneration,” published by Random House Company. He also served on the Diabetes Advisory Council for the State of Florida by then Governor Jeb Bush.

“Dr. Eaton has done an exemplary job in pioneering medical research and educating his peers,” said Craig R. Sweet, M.D., Past-President of the Lee County Medical Society and founder of the awards ceremony. “For his past, ongoing and future research in the field of Ophthalmology, the Committee decided to honor him. We are proud of his work; proud to have him in Southwest Florida and certainly wish him continued success.”

Google Retina Health Center: Alexander Eaton M.D.
I have been treated by numerous macular specialists in Michigan and Florida over the years. I have found Dr Eaton and his associates to be the top of this group. He is smart, courteous, and carrying. His staff are polite and competent. With a recent severe medical eye emergency he stayed late, and followed up to assure my eye was successfully treated.
